More Tips on
How to Stop Procrastinating

In a previous article, I provided some high-level tips on how to break the procrastination cycle. But since many of us habitually put off things that need to get done, it’s worth exploring this topic in more detail.

People procrastinate for various reasons, including:

1. We believe the work can afford to wait or be delayed.

2. We are busy with something else we think is more important.

3. We do not like the work involved, or it is difficult to do.

4. We are not sure if we can complete the work effectively.

5. We are missing information or items required to complete the tasks.

6. We (conveniently) forget about it.

When we procrastinate, our to-do list grows and we can easily become overwhelmed. As hard as it may be to beat the procrastination habit, we stand to gain a lot and will lose nothing by overturning this habit. So what can we do to overcome procrastination?

Top 6 Ways to Overcome Procrastination & Reduce the Risk of Overwhelm

1. As soon as you begin thinking that it might be ok to delay a certain task , remind yourself that it is better not to post-pone it. .Get it done immediately, and then you can breathe a sigh of relief. Getting chores done can be gratifying, make the load lighter, and eventually help you feel better.

2. When you’ve been busy with something very important and then you have a bit of spare time, use this idle time to attend to things on the pending list.

3. Remember that delaying difficult work may make the work even more difficult. For instance, a leaky roof may not be a problem if it doesn't rain; but as soon as it rains, you may have extensive water damage to deal with besides fixing the roof.

4. If you’re unsure whether work that needs to be done will be effective, seek advice from people who are more knowledgeable about the particular area. Procrastinating won't help.

5. If you delay work because you don’t have all the right materials, you’ll never get started until you find what you need . Again, procrastinating won't help.

6. Post a list of all pending household chores on the refrigerator door as a constant reminder of what needs to be done.

It is often easy to delay work that needs our attention. Getting a job started is the most difficult part, but once you have started, half of the job is already done and the second half is so much easier.

Every time you feel like procrastinating, picture yourself completing the job and think about how great that will feel – then take action instead.
